A Tribute to Werewolves

What can one say about werewolves?

A lot, actually. The legend of werewolves goes as far back as ancient Greece with the legend of Lycaon. Lycaon was the king of Arcadia. Though there are several versions of exactly why Zeus cursed Lycaon and turned him into a human-wolf-like creature, the main gist is that Lycaon and/or his sons fed Zeus human flesh. This pissed off Zeus and he cursed Lycaon, and in some instances his sons as well. Makes sense. After all, if it were me and some puny mortal was so impertinent I'd certainly curse them.

There is a lot more on the origins and what-not of werewolves on the web, so I'm not going to give you a folklore lesson on werewolves, lycans, skin-walkers, or whatever else you choose to call them.

What I am going to do is put up some clips of some of my favourite werewolf movies. Actually, I don't really think there any werewolf movies I don't like... Oh wait, I forgot Twilight: New Moon is out or coming out. So I guess there is a werewolf movie I don't like.

Anyhow, I find it rather sad that not many werewolf movies are made. I wonder why that is?

My favourite werewolf movies are the Ginger Snaps movies, the Underworld trilogy, and Dog Soldiers.

My favourite werewolf is portrayed by the late great Lon Chaney Jr.

Whatever your favourites might be, my morose minions, I hope you enjoy my little plethora of selections.

I have always thought that, of all the supernatural creatures, werewolves were the saddest and most tormented of souls. This last video exemplifies this perfectly.

  1. There's some "Rabble, rabble" going around that werewolves are going to be the next monster genre ripe for saturation. I certainly hope not. It's a shame seeing some of the best-loved monsters with (all with long histories of folklore and sub-cultural love) mashed up and turned into young adult literature and energy drinks.

If this trend keeps up we'll be left with sad, nearly unmarketable genre leftovers like the abominable snowman and wereroaches.

  2. @cornfed2316 No worries mate. Thanks for reading..
@KingUnicorn I agree with what you are saying. I guess though from a marketing standpoint I've a spin off already started from my Lili and the Vampires series I'm creating called Lili and the Werewolves.. I have these ideas that pop into me head around 2am so I have to run with them.. Anyway, I hope you are ready for some new original stories next month. Cheers
