Splinter was recommended to me as a possibility for another article series I am working on. So I gave it a watch and decided it wasn't a good fit, but I'd review it instead, at least I could get something out of the time I'd spent watching it. There was nothing wrong so to speak about the movie, but I also found myself checking IG & FB throughout because it was a bit slow, and it was just a step above a syfy channel movie. NOT that, that is a bad thing, it's just a thing. (I'm using that word a lot in this review). I guess what I am trying to say is that it was alright. I didn't dislike it, but I won't go out of my way to ever watch it again. The concept of the story IMO was the best part. It had a lot of potential, and I would have loved to have seen a different telling of the splinter infection, and clearer video of the splinter creatures. Jill Wagner was great as Polly (though through the whole movie I thought they were calling her Molly due to actors mumbling). To be honest she is the reason I didn't turn it off. (not molly/polly but Jill the actress). I felt the meth head girlfriend story was a bit forced and uneven, and the other performances weren't "bad" but they were a little stiff. I haven't seen the actors in other projects so I can't be certain if it was them or some other factor, like script, directing, etc. Again, I went through the whole film thinking her name was something completely different, so... Some of the scenes were pretty good. I liked the opening scene at the petrol (gas) station, and a few of the scenes with what you could make out clearly of the creature. I also liked the end, and wish more of the movie had focused on the virus/infection. I mean, I didn't give it a super low rating, in fact I gave it a 2 1/2 out of 5 zombie claws because of the originality, and sheer nastiness of the splinter virus. The cinematography was pretty good, and it didn't look like a super low budget movie. It was an OK watch for a creature feature flick, especially if you are looking for something to have on in the background whilst cooking, or cleaning. If you like creatures, you might like it, you might not. Feel free to share your opinion.
